Abacus Maths Soroban Association of South Africa (AMSASA)
Is a registered Non-Profit Organisation founded in January 2015. Our mission is to unite South African companies teaching children how to use the Japanese Abacus, providing a platform for national competitions and international representation. As a recognised member of the Global Association of Japanese Soroban and Mental Arithmetic (GAJSMA), our members can compete globally. Through AMSASA, we aim to empower young South African children to develop their math skills and represent their country on the international stage.
AMSASA Rustenburg 2025

GAJSMA Dubai 2019
The GAJSMA International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship took place in Dubai, UAE on September 29, 2019. Among the 442 competitors from around the world, 48 talented young South Africans made their mark. South Africa shone brightly, securing an impressive medal tally:
- 2 Super Champion Trophies for 1st place in level and age group.
- 8 Champion Trophies for 2nd place in level and age group.
- 38 Children bringing home Gold, Silver, and Bronze Trophies.
This international competition was an incredible experience for all the participating children, and we’re beaming with pride!

GAJSMA South Africa 2018
The GAJSMA International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship was proudly hosted in Gauteng, South Africa on September 30, 2018. The event drew 184 talented young competitors from across the country. It was a resounding success for South Africa, with:
- 13 Top Achiever Awards for 1st place in level and age group.
- 17 Champion Trophies for 2nd place in level and age group.
- 154 Children bringing home Gold, Silver, and Bronze trophies.

GAJSMA Thailand 2017
South Africa shone brightly at the GAJSMA International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship, held in Thailand on October 1, 2017. Our team of 61 young competitors made their mark on the global stage. The results were impressive:
- 7 Top Achiever Trophies for 1st place in level and age group.
- 6 Champion Trophies for 2nd place in level and age group.
- 48 Children bringing home Gold, Silver, and Bronze Trophies.
Our talented competitors represented South Africa well and can be proud of their achievements.

GAJSMA Singapore 2016
South Africa excelled at the GAJSMA International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship, held in Singapore on October 2, 2016. Our team of 28 young competitors delivered an impressive performance.
The highlights included:
- 4 Top Achiever Trophies for 1st place in level and age group.
- 7 Champion Trophies for 2nd place in level and age group.
- 17 Children securing Gold, Silver, and Bronze Trophies.

GAJSMA India 2015
South Africa made its international debut at the GAJSMA International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship, held in Chennai, India on August 30, 2015. AMSASA’s inaugural participation in the global arena was a resounding success. Despite being represented by only three young competitors, South Africa achieved remarkable results:
- One competitor secured the prestigious Top Achiever Trophy, earning 1st place overall in their age group and level.
- The other two competitors brought home Silver and Bronze Trophies, respectively.
